Why Rank Group (LSE:RNK) Is in Focus Today
Rank Group (LSE:RNK), the owner of Grosvenor Casinos, Mecca bingo clubs and the Enracha venues in Spain, is in focus on 3 November 2026 as investors weigh a sharp disconnect between improving operations and a falling share price. The FTSE 250 gambling and leisure group has delivered steady revenue growth, record annual net gaming revenue and higher profits, yet the shares have more than halved from their 52-week high and are now trading near their lows.
That gap has made Rank a talking point among value-focused investors and on social Investment platforms, where debate centres on whether the market is overly pessimistic about UK gambling tax increases or whether the stock is correctly pricing in a tougher profit outlook for its digital business.
Q1 2026/27 Trading Update
In its first-quarter update for the three months to 30 September 2026, Rank reported group like-for-like net gaming revenue (NGR) growth of 5% to £216.1 million. Digital NGR rose 6% to £64.9 million, Grosvenor venues grew 6% to £108.1 million, Mecca venues were flat at £32.2 million and Enracha venues in Spain increased 7% to £10.9 million. The company held its full-year guidance.
Growth slowed compared with the 9% recorded in the same quarter a year earlier, when digital revenue was rising by double digits. This deceleration, combined with cost and tax pressures, has tempered enthusiasm despite the solid top-line performance.
A Strong 2025/26 Financial Year
The slowdown comes after an excellent financial year to 30 June 2026. Rank upgraded its profit guidance twice during the year, ultimately guiding to at least £76 million in underlying operating profit versus a consensus of around £68 million. Full-year operating profit rose about 21%, driven by stronger gaming machine performance in Grosvenor casinos, tighter cost control and growth in digital. Group like-for-like NGR reached a record of around £834 million, up 6% on the prior year.
Trading momentum continued into the new financial year, and Capital Expenditure is expected to normalise at around £40 million in 2026/27, supporting stronger underlying cash generation.
The Tax and Regulation Picture
The biggest headwind for Rank Group (LSE:RNK) is taxation. The UK government increased Remote Gaming Duty in the 2025 Autumn Budget, and Rank has warned that digital profitability will decline in 2026/27 as the full-year impact of the higher rate comes through. This has been a major Factor behind the share price weakness.
There have also been important positives. Bingo Duty was abolished from 1 April 2026, which is expected to accelerate the recovery of the Mecca venues business, with management targeting double-digit operating profit from Mecca in 2026/27. Land-based casino reforms have allowed Grosvenor to install more gaming machines in larger venues, a key driver of recent profit growth.
In October 2026, Rank announced the conclusion of a settlement with the Gambling Commission, removing a source of uncertainty that had hung over the shares.
Leadership and Strategy
Richard Harris, who served as interim chief executive, was confirmed as permanent CEO in July 2026. The strategy focuses on maximising the Grosvenor estate through gaming machine expansion and venue improvements, growing proprietary digital platforms, restoring Mecca to profitability, and delivering at least £100 million of operating profit in the medium term. Chairman John Ott bought shares earlier in 2026, and several directors have reported share dealings since September.
Valuation
At current levels, Rank's Market Value is roughly £350 million. With the group targeting at least £100 million of operating profit over the medium term and capital spending normalising, supporters argue the stock trades on a low Earnings multiple relative to its recovery potential. Some analysts have set price targets well above the current price, although others have cut their targets to reflect the tax impact.
Key Risks
Further tax increases on gambling, tighter regulation including affordability checks, weaker consumer spending, rising wage and energy costs, and competition in online gaming are all risks. Execution on the digital platform and Mecca recovery will be essential to rebuilding investor confidence.
What Investors Are Watching Next
Investors will be watching for evidence that digital growth can hold up despite the higher Remote Gaming Duty, the pace of gaming machine roll-outs across Grosvenor casinos, and the recovery in Mecca profitability following the abolition of Bingo Duty. Any changes to UK gambling taxation in future budgets will be closely monitored. The next major milestone is the interim results for the six months to 31 December 2026, expected in early 2027, which will show how much of the revenue growth is converting into profit.
