National Grid plc (LSE:NG) is a multinational electricity and gas utility headquartered in the UK, operating energy transmission and distribution networks across the UK and northeastern US. The company focuses on delivering energy safely and reliably to millions of customers.

The company has completed the divestment of its US-based renewables arm, National Grid Renewables, to Brookfield Asset Management and its institutional partners, including Brookfield Renewable Partners.

The deal is part of National Grid’s broader portfolio simplification and strategic focus on its core regulated energy transmission and distribution operations in the UK and the US. The sale follows a trend among utility operators reassessing their involvement in renewable energy development amid evolving regulatory, financial, and operational landscapes.

National Grid Renewables focused on developing, owning, and operating renewable energy assets in North America, including utility-scale solar, wind, and battery storage projects. Brookfield, through its renewable energy affiliate Brookfield Renewable Partners, is expected to integrate the acquired assets into its global portfolio, which spans hydroelectric, wind, solar, and energy storage facilities.

National Grid previously indicated its intention to focus on enhancing resilience and reliability across its transmission and distribution networks and enabling the integration of more renewable energy sources through its grid systems. This divestiture aligns with that strategy by allowing the company to concentrate capital on its regulated asset base and network upgrades.

National Grid shares were trading 0.39% higher at GBX 1,039 per share at the time of writing on 30 May 2025. On a year-to-date basis, the share price has increased by approximately 8.23%.
