Itaconix plc (AIM: ITX, OTCQB: ITXXF) has announced the commercial launch of BIO*Asterix®, a new range of plant-derived monomers designed for use in polymeric binders across the paints, coatings, and adhesives sectors. The products, derived from itaconic acid, are intended to serve as functional building blocks that can fully or partially replace fossil-based monomers such as acrylates, methacrylates, and styrene in industrial resin systems.

The launch marks a shift from limited customer engagement to wider commercial availability through ecommerce distribution, with the company targeting North American laboratories involved in polymer development. The product line includes three initial offerings, one of which is protected under a newly granted patent.

According to Itaconix, the BIO*Asterix series will provide alternatives to fossil-sourced monomers in the USD 2.6 billion butyl acrylate market across Europe and North America. Over time, the company intends to expand the range by introducing both proprietary and non-proprietary itaconate derivatives.

The new monomers are marketed for their compatibility with polymeric binder formulations and are expected to find applications in both academic research and industrial product development. The company is opening access to customers who may have previously had limited ability to obtain specialty monomers for trial and testing purposes.

The initiative reflects an expansion of Itaconix’s commercial strategy, which had previously focused on working closely with a select group of potential partners. By increasing access and visibility through a digital platform, the company aims to tap into broader interest within the paints and coatings segment, particularly in areas prioritizing safety and reduced environmental impact in formulation chemistry.

The BIO*Asterix products are not positioned solely as direct replacements for existing monomers but rather as components that may enable new performance attributes or improved safety profiles in end-use applications. According to the company, the combination of plant-based content and multifunctional characteristics of these materials may align with evolving regulatory and sustainability targets across consumer and industrial goods.

The launch also marks the beginning of a longer-term development plan focused on expanding the presence of itaconate derivatives in specialty polymers. Initial adoption is expected to come from polymer research laboratories, where new material classes are often evaluated before wider commercial use.

Commenting on the launch, Dr. Yvon Durant, Chief Technology Officer at Itaconix, noted that early testing has shown promise for these materials in supporting alternative approaches to acrylate and styrene-based chemistries. He highlighted internal research underway to develop new polymers that incorporate the BIO*Asterix monomers.

John R. Shaw, Chief Executive Officer, added that the use of ecommerce and broader product access represent foundational steps in building out future opportunities for the BIO*Asterix brand. He indicated that the company will provide updates as market adoption progresses and additional products are added to the catalog.
