Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. To wit, the Phoenix Spree Deutschland share price has climbed 100% in five years, easily topping the market return of 16% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 5.5% in the last year , including dividends . Check out our latest analysis for Phoenix Spree Deutschland In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement. Over half a decade, Phoenix Spree Deutschland managed to grow its earnings per share at 2.4% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 15% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image). earnings-per-share-growth It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our freereport on Phoenix Spree Deutschland's earnings, revenue and cash flow. What About Dividends? It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Phoenix Spree Deutschland, it has a TSR of 122% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence! A Different Perspective We're pleased to report that Phoenix Spree Deutschland shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 5.5% over one year. That's including the dividend. However, that falls short of the 17% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Phoenix Spree Deutschland is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
