It is hard to get excited after looking at Dusk Group's (ASX:DSK) recent performance, when its stock has declined 13% over the past three months. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financial performance over the long term, which in this case looks quite promising. In this article, we decided to focus on Dusk Group's ROE. Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments. Check out our latest analysis for Dusk Group How Is ROE Calculated? The formula for ROE is: Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Dusk Group is: 51% = AU$20m ÷ AU$39m (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021). The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. That means that for every A$1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated A$0.51 in profit. What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth? Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes. A Side By Side comparison of Dusk Group's Earnings Growth And 51% ROE Firstly, we acknowledge that Dusk Group has a significantly high ROE. Secondly, even when compared to the industry average of 21% the company's ROE is quite impressive. As a result, Dusk Group's exceptional 44% net income growth seen over the past five years, doesn't come as a surprise. We then compared Dusk Group's net income growth with the industry and we're pleased to see that the company's growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 18% in the same period. past-earnings-growth Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. The high three-year median payout ratio of 70% (implying that it keeps only 30% of profits) for Dusk Group suggests that the company's growth wasn't really hampered despite it returning most of the earnings to its shareholders. While Dusk Group has seen growth in its earnings, it only recently started to pay a dividend. It is most likely that the company decided to impress new and existing shareholders with a dividend. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 67% of its profits over the next three years. Therefore, the company's future ROE is also not expected to change by much with analysts predicting an ROE of 44%. Summary Overall, we are quite pleased with Dusk Group's performance. In particular, its high ROE is quite noteworthy and also the probable explanation behind its considerable earnings growth. Yet, the company is retaining a small portion of its profits. Which means that the company has been able to grow its earnings in spite of it, so that's not too bad. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
