It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up. Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like CME Group (NASDAQ:CME). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. How Quickly Is CME Group Increasing Earnings Per Share? If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. CME Group managed to grow EPS by 9.1% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it. Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Not all of CME Group's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers used in this article might not be the best representation of the underlying business. The good news is that CME Group is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.7 percentage points to 65%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts. We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$100b company like CME Group. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$303m. This comes in at 0.3% of shares in the company, which is a fair amount of a business of this size. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves. Story Continues Is CME Group Worth Keeping An Eye On? One positive for CME Group is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. For those who are looking for a little more than this, the high level of insider ownership enhances our enthusiasm for this growth. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. We should say that we've discovered 2 warning signs for CME Group that you should be aware of before investing here.
