If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). For example, the Onex Corporation (TSE:ONEX) share price is up 44% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market decline of around 0.9% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! And shareholders have also done well over the long term, with an increase of 36% in the last three years. Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business. Check out our latest analysis for Onex In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time. Onex went from making a loss to reporting a profit, in the last year. When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements). We doubt the modest 0.4% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. However the year on year revenue growth of 403% would help. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth. The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image). TSX:ONEX Earnings and Revenue Growth January 18th 2024 We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of Onex's earnings, revenue and cash flow. A Different Perspective It's nice to see that Onex shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 45% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 5% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Onex better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Onex , and understanding them should be part of your investment process. There are plenty of other companies that have insiders buying up shares. You probably do not want to miss this freelist of growing companies that insiders are buying.
