Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. And the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. For example, the Kinaxis Inc. (TSE:KXS) share price is up 95% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 39% (ignoring dividends). While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment. Check out our latest analysis for Kinaxis To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price. During five years of share price growth, Kinaxis actually saw its EPS drop 4.9% per year. So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics. In contrast revenue growth of 21% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Kinaxis is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment. The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image). TSX:KXS Earnings and Revenue Growth January 4th 2024 We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for Kinaxis in this interactive graph of future profit estimates. A Different Perspective Investors in Kinaxis had a tough year, with a total loss of 6.2%, against a market gain of about 8.0%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 14%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
