Suncorp Group Limited (ASX:SUN) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to A$0.17 on the 21st of September. The dividend yield will be in the average range for the industry at 3.5%. Check out our latest analysis for Suncorp Group Suncorp Group's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. The last payment made up 74% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business. Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 79.7% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 39%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend. historic-dividend Dividend Volatility While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the dividend has gone from A$0.361 total annually to A$0.40. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 1.0% over that duration. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent. Dividend Growth Is Doubtful Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Suncorp Group has seen earnings per share falling at 9.0% per year over the last five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established. In Summary Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock. Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
