Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But no-one is immune from buying too high. Zooming in on an example, the Just Group plc (LON:JUST) share price dropped 61% in the last half decade. That's not a lot of fun for true believers. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 36% over the last twelve months. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 15% in a month. So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress. Check out our latest analysis for Just Group Because Just Group made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth. In the last five years Just Group saw its revenue shrink by 6.1% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The share price decline of 10% compound, over five years, is understandable given the company is losing money, and revenue is moving in the wrong direction. We don't think anyone is rushing to buy this stock. Not that many investors like to invest in companies that are losing money and not growing revenue. You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image). earnings-and-revenue-growth You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this freeinteractive graphic. A Different Perspective While the broader market lost about 13% in the twelve months, Just Group shareholders did even worse, losing 35% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 10% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
