For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term Liberty Latin America Ltd. (NASDAQ:LILA) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 40% in three years, versus a market return of about 23%. It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that. Because Liberty Latin America made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size. In the last three years Liberty Latin America saw its revenue shrink by 3.7% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock has disappointed holders over the last three years, falling 12%, annualized. That makes sense given the lack of either profits or revenue growth. However, in this kind of situation you can sometimes find opportunity, where sentiment is negative but the company is actually making good progress. You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).NasdaqGS:LILA Earnings and Revenue Growth March 31st 2025 We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective While the broader market gained around 7.3% in the last year, Liberty Latin America shareholders lost 8.4%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 7% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. Investors who like to make money usually check up on insider purchases, such as the price paid, and total amount bought.
