It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up. Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Stantec (TSE:STN). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Stantec with the means to add long-term value to shareholders. View our latest analysis for Stantec Stantec's Earnings Per Share Are Growing The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Shareholders will be happy to know that Stantec's EPS has grown 20% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away satisfied. One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note Stantec achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 17% to CA$5.0b. That's a real positive. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for Stantec? Are Stantec Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders? Since Stantec has a market capitalisation of CA$12b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at CA$58m. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. While their ownership only accounts for 0.5%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders. Is Stantec Worth Keeping An Eye On? If you believe that share price follows earnings per share you should definitely be delving further into Stantec's strong EPS growth.
