The board of WPP plc (LON:WPP) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 5th of July, with investors receiving £0.244 per share. This makes the dividend yield 5.4%, which will augment investor returns quite nicely. Check out our latest analysis for WPP WPP's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 383% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 41%. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend. Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise exponentially over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 40%, which would make us comfortable with the dividend's sustainability, despite the levels currently being elevated. historic-dividend Dividend Volatility The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from £0.285 total annually to £0.394. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 3.3% over that duration. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment. Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Earnings per share has been sinking by 29% over the last five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited. The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment. Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
