Pershing Square Holdings, Ltd. 

Pershing Square Holdings, Ltd. (LSE: PSH), is an FTSE 100 listed, Guernsey-based investment holding company structured as a closed-ended fund. The Company is principally engaged in the business of acquiring and holding positions in a concentrated number of large capitalization companies. Its objective is to maximize its long-term compound annual rate of growth in intrinsic value per share. It invests primarily in large-capitalization securities, which are highly liquid under normal market conditions.

H1 FY24 Results (Released on 15 August 2024)

  1. Underperformance Against Market Benchmarks: Pershing Square Holdings Ltd. (PSH) reported a 5.7% NAV return in H1 2024 and (2.3%) YTD through August 13, 2024, significantly lagging behind the S&P 500's 15.3% and 14.9% returns, raising concerns about its ability to match market performance.
  2. Weakness in Universal Music Group (UMG) & Poor Hedging Strategy: UMG posted a (3.8%) negative return as subscription and streaming growth slowed from 13% to 7% QoQ, while the interest rate swaption strategy further eroded returns by (1.9%), reflecting ineffective hedging.
  3. Persistent Discount to NAV Despite Narrowing: The discount to NAV decreased from 28.7% to 22.7%, but widened again after the reporting period, highlighting ongoing investor skepticism about valuation and growth prospects.
  4. High Fees Reducing Shareholder Value: PSH incurred $125 million in performance fees and $93.3 million in management fees, significantly impacting net earnings despite steps taken to reduce performance-related costs.
  5. Performance from Chipotle & Alphabet: Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) contributed 5.0% to gross returns, supported by 11% same-store sales growth, while Alphabet (GOOG) added 4.2%, benefiting from 14% revenue growth and a 340 basis point margin expansion.
