Ashtead Group PLC (LSE: AHT)

Ashtead Group PLC (LSE: AHT) is a UK-based global equipment rental company listed on the FTSE 100. Operating under the Sunbelt Rentals brand in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, the firm offers a comprehensive range of construction and industrial equipment for diverse uses, catering to a wide and varied customer base. This Report covers the Key Recommendation Rationale, Conclusion, and Recommendation on the stock.

Key Recommendation Rationale – Sell at GBX 5,208.00

  • Resistance near Current levels: AHT’s stock price has almost reached Resistance (R1) which was stated in the previous report on 17 November 2025 therefore, there can be a possibility of a decline from resistance levels. Considering the market conditions and the price action, it is prudent to exit the stock.
  • Margin Pressure and Profit Decline - Despite modest revenue growth, profitability weakened across several measures. Adjusted EBITDA, operating profit, and profit before tax all declined year-on-year, reflecting margin pressure from higher depreciation on an expanded fleet, increased internal repair and repositioning costs, and lower gains on used equipment sales. This indicates that revenue growth is currently insufficient to offset rising cost and asset intensity.
  • Underperformance in the UK and General Tool Segment - The UK business continued to lag, with declining margins, lower operating profit, and reliance on restructuring actions, including non-recurring costs and asset disposals, to improve efficiency. Similarly, the North America General Tool segment saw reduced returns on investment and lower utilisation of a larger fleet, highlighting challenges in translating scale into improved returns amid softer local non-residential construction demand.

Valuation Methodology: Price/ Earnings Approach

Conclusion

AHT is expected to trade at a discount, considering Margin Pressure & Profit Decline and fears of global slowdown. For conducting the valuation, the following peers have been considered - Works co uk PLC (LSE: WRKS), Card Factory PLC (LSE: CARD) and others.

Given its current trading levels, Underperformance in the UK & General Tool Segment, recent rally in the share price, and associated risks, it is prudent to exit the stock at the current levels. Hence, a ‘Sell’ recommendation is given on the stock at the Closing Market Price of GBX 5,208.00 as of 15 December 2025.
