Investment Rationale for Valuation – Speculative Buy at GBX 118.73

  • Trading Update: On 12 May 2022, the company provided an update on its performance in the first 14 weeks of the new financial year covering the period to 7 May 2022. It has stated that total sales in the Group’s like for like businesses to be more than 5% higher during the period, compared to the prior corresponding period.
  • Decent Interim Performance: The Group delivered revenues of £3,885.8 million in H1FY22, compared to £2,544.9 million reported in H1FY21. Gross profit grew to 48.5% during the period, from 45.6% in the prior corresponding period.
  • Acquisitions: The Group acquired DTLR and Marketing investment Group in Poland during H1FY22. These transactions give the company exposure to important markets in the US and Eastern Europe.
  • Technical Indicator: The price of the stock is hovering between the lower and middle Bollinger band, with a 14-day RSI level of ~41.35.

Conclusion

The management expects the headline profit before tax and exceptional items for the year-end 28 January 2023 will at least be equal to that for the year ended 29 January 2022 and is anticipated to be approximately £940 million.

Based on the decent interim performance, rise in net cash position and support from the valuation as done using the above method, we have given a “Speculative Buy” recommendation on JD Sports Fashion PLC at the current market price of GBX 118.73 (as on 08 June 2022, at 11:50 AM GMT+1) with lower double-digit upside potential based on 11.30x Price/NTM Earnings (approx.) on FY23E earnings per share (approx.).
