Gulf Keystone Petroleum Ltd (LSE: GKP)

Gulf Keystone Petroleum Ltd (LSE: GKP) is an FTSE listed company, Petroleum Limited, which is a Bermuda-based holding company. The Company is engaged in the business of oil and gas exploration, development and production. The Company is the operator of the Shaikan Field, situated approximately 60 kilometers to the north-west of Erbil, the city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and covering an area of over 280 square kilometers (km2).

This Report covers the Key Recommendation Rationale, Conclusion, and Recommendation on the stock.

Key Recommendation Rationale – Sell at GBX 185.80

  • Reliance on Interim Export Payments: The restart of exports from Shaikan Field is still under interim agreements, with payments contingent on Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cash flows and approval. Any delay or non-payment could materially affect cash flow and shareholder returns.
  • Exposure to Geopolitical and Regional Risk: Operations are concentrated in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, a region with political, regulatory, and security uncertainties. Potential risks include government disputes, policy changes, or instability, which could disrupt production, exports, or revenue.
  • Optionality-Dependent Growth & Uncertain Development: Future growth (e.g., new drilling, incremental production) is contingent on consistent export payments and international pricing. If payments remain irregular or negotiations with the KRG drag on, planned expansions and field development may be delayed or scaled back, limiting upside potential.

Valuation Methodology: Price/ Earnings Approach

Conclusion

GKP is expected to trade at a discount, considering valuation downside, reliance on interim export payments and limited cash cushion. For conducting the valuation, the following peers have been considered – Energean PLC (LSE: ENOG), Kistos Holdings PLC (LSE: KIST) and others.

Given its current trading levels, exposure to geopolitical risk, commodity price, optionality-dependent growth, uncertain development, recent rally in the share price, and associated risks, it is prudent to exit the stock at the current levels. Hence, a ‘Sell’ recommendation is given on the stock at the current market price of GBX 185.80 on 19th January 2026 at 08:13 AM, GMT.
