In the financial year 2025 (FY25), the company’s retail sales increased by 3.1% YoY to USD 31,555 million, primarily driven by a 4.2% rise in grocery sales, which offset the decline in fuel sales. Operating profit rose by 7.2% YoY to USD 1,036 million, compared to USD 966 million in FY24. Profit after tax surged by 76.6% to USD 242 million, supported by  food performance despite ongoing challenges in general merchandise and fuel.

Business Update

On April 22, 2025, the company announced the commencement of a share buyback programme of up to GBP 200 million, scheduled to conclude by September 12, 2025. The initiative is aimed at reducing the company’s share capital through the repurchase and subsequent cancellation of ordinary shares.

Company Outlook

Sainsbury’s expects retail operating profit to reach GBP 1 billion in FY26, driven by store expansion, space reallocation, and continued trading momentum, with over GBP 500 million projected in retail free cash flow.

The company plans to open 15 supermarkets and 25 convenience stores in FY26, adding 700,000 square feet, while targeting GBP 1 billion in cost savings by FY27 with the aim of mitigating inflationary pressures and improving margins.
